As a punch press operator in metal fabrication, your primary responsibility is to set up, operate, and maintain punch press machines to produce metal parts and components according to specifications. You will work in manufacturing environments, using precision machinery to perform cutting, punching, stamping, or bending operations on metal sheets or parts.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Machine Setup and Preparation:
    • Review work orders, blueprints, or technical drawings to determine job requirements and specifications.
    • Select and set up appropriate tooling, dies, and materials on the punch press machine based on job requirements.
  2. Punch Press Operation:
    • Operate punch press machines to perform cutting, punching, stamping, or forming operations on metal sheets or parts.
    • Monitor machine operations, adjust settings as needed, and ensure continuous production flow and quality output.
  3. Quality Control and Inspection:
    • Inspect finished parts for accuracy, completeness, and quality using measuring instruments (e.g., calipers, micrometers).
    • Verify dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish against blueprint or customer specifications.
  4. Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
    • Perform routine maintenance tasks on punch press machines, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn parts.
    • Troubleshoot machine malfunctions, identify root causes of issues, and make adjustments or repairs to maintain optimal performance.
  5. Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures, including wearing appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and following lockout/tagout procedures.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring safe handling of materials, tools, and equipment.
  6. Production Documentation:
    • Record production data, including quantities produced, machine settings, and any issues encountered during operations.
    • Complete production reports and logs accurately to track productivity, efficiency, and quality metrics.

  • Check products for correct shapes, dimensions and other specifications
  • Cut, bend, roll, ream, punch, drill, weld or otherwise shape and form metal stock into parts or products
  • Lay out, set up and operate one or more light or heavy metalworking machines
  • Operate presses or other forging machines to perform hot or cold forging to shape or form metal
  • Position and adjust dies on anvil of forging machinery
  • Read and interpret specifications or follow verbal instructions

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a punch press operator or in metal fabrication operations.
  • Knowledge of punch press machinery, tooling, and metalworking processes.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in measuring and inspecting parts.
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve equipment problems.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or apprenticeship in metal fabrication or machine operation is advantageous.
  • Previous experience in operating punch press machines or similar industrial equipment.
  • Familiarity with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines and automated manufacturing processes is beneficial.

Working Conditions:

  • Work in a manufacturing environment, often standing for extended periods and working around machinery.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, metal particles, and chemicals used in metal fabrication; adherence to safety protocols is essential.
  • Shift work and flexibility in hours may be required to support production schedules and meet customer demands.
