Sawmill machine operator Needed in Canada By Swiftwood Forest Products 

As a sawmill machine operator, your primary responsibility is to operate and maintain machinery used in the processing and cutting of lumber and timber products. You will work in a sawmill environment, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of equipment to meet production goals and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Machine Operation:
    • Operate sawmill equipment such as saws, planers, edgers, and trimmers to process logs into lumber and timber products.
    • Monitor machine operations, adjust settings, and feed logs or lumber into machines according to production requirements.
  2. Quality Control:
    • Inspect lumber and timber products for defects, size accuracy, and quality standards.
    • Make adjustments to machines or processes to optimize product quality and minimize waste.
  3. Maintenance and Repair:
    • Perform routine maintenance tasks on sawmill machinery, including lubrication, cleaning, and minor repairs.
    • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with maintenance technicians for repairs as needed.
  4. Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines for operating machinery and handling timber products.
    • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and company policies related to sawmill operations.
  5. Production Planning and Coordination:
    • Collaborate with supervisors and team members to prioritize production schedules and meet daily output targets.
    • Coordinate with loggers or suppliers for the delivery of logs and timber materials to the sawmill.

Tasks

  • Examine logs and rough lumber to decide best lumber cuts
  • Operate automated lumbermill equipment from control rooms or consoles
  • Saw, trim and plane rough lumber into dressed lumber of various sizes
  • Saw or split shingles and shakes
  • Start conveyor system to move logs and lumber to and from saws
  • Monitor logs and lumber movement to ensure cuts are made according to specifications
  • Set up and adjust saw equipment
  • Replace blades or bands
  • Clean and lubricate sawmill equipment

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience operating sawmill equipment and machinery, including saws, planers, and edgers.

  • Attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Physical stamina and strength to lift and move heavy logs and timber products.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience as a sawmill machine operator or in a related field is typically required.
  • Training or certification in sawmill operations and safety practices may be advantageous.

Working Conditions:

  • Work primarily in a sawmill environment, which can be noisy, dusty, and exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Regularly lift, move, and manipulate heavy logs and lumber products.
  • Follow strict safety protocols and wear appropriate protective gear.
